Make Your Local News Work

May 21st, 2013 By comms@ldn.coop 4 Comments

A series of events to promote co-operative ownership of local media kicks off in London on June 3rd.

The series, organised by Co-operatives UK and the Carnegie UK Trust will showcase alternative stories of community-owned media in rude health, challenging the pervasive (and erroneous) idea that local papers are yesterday’s news.

The meeting is aimed at journalists, activists and otter concerned about the decline in local media for local democratic accountability, and aims to seed new developments, with a follow-up package to enable new ventures to be created, or to help organise buy-outs of existing titles.

The first meeting will be from 6.30-8.30 at the NUJ offices at Headland House on Grays Inn Road. Key speakers will be Paul Wood, from the West Highland Free Press, the UK’s first employee-owned newspaper, and also from Helen Goodman MP, the Shadow Minister with responsibility for media and will be chaired by Co-ops London’s chair, Clive Fraser.

Places are free, but space is limited. You can find out more, including how to book, here.
