EVENT: Old Forms, New Strategies: Trade Unions, Co-operatives and the Commons

November 12th, 2013 By comms@ldn.coop 1 Comment

Five years after the beginning of the current crisis, there are good reasons for trade unions and the co-operative movement to collaborate. But are they too entrenched in tradition and ideology to come up with effective strategies for these times?

Co-operatives London are sponsoring STIR Magazine’s free event on Wednesday 4 December at 7pm, at Oxford House (Theatre), Derbyshire Street, London E2 6HQ

We will be debating trade unions and co-operatives in relation to the struggle for the commons. We will ask what potential they have for marginalised and precarious workers, and look at the historical reasons why trade unions and co-operatives have often been opposing currents of practice and thought. We will ask what they can teach us – and each other – about radical social change.

We will be joined by Tara Mulqueen who recently published Trade Unions, Co-operatives and The Politics of Purity in the Autumn issue of STIR magazine, which you can buy here; Siôn Whellens, an active worker co-operator; and Dave Boyle who has worked with fans to transform their clubs into co-operatives and more recently on the co-operative alternative for local news.

The event will be followed by drinks (9pm-11.30pm) at The Common House, a collectively managed space just 2 minutes walk from the venue.

This event is organised by STIR and sponsored by Co-operatives London.
